Foreign Language Ministries

E.S.L.

Many people in the Metroplex do not realize that DFW has grown by 1.6 million people over the last ten years and 1.2 million of those that are new to our area are foreign born.  That’s right – 75% of the new people to our city have come from other countries!  Tonight in the Metroplex, 40% of the households will not be speaking English in their home.

Bryan Galloway, a member of Prestonwood and former International Mission Board/Asia Pacific missionary supervisor, recently said, “When we left the U.S. for the mission field years ago, America was a mono-cultural society and so was the church.  When we returned, the U.S. was multi-cultural but the church had remained mono-cultural.”

Prestonwood has a heart for the nations and for the people of the nations coming to the U.S. We all know that Spanish speaking people from many countries are coming; but what may be surprising to some is that Chinese are coming to Plano at twice the rate of Hispanics, and Brazilians and Iranians comprise the other huge groups of immigrants.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program tries to address this great need as we attempt primarily to build Christ-like, loving relationships with people while teaching them English.  Approximately 500 people a year come to Prestonwood to learn English.  We want to find even more practical ways to serve those coming to America, whether that be explaining cultural nuances, teaching people how to drive, or helping them gain their citizenship – always keeping in mind that heaven’s citizenship is the priority!  Bibles are provided in each student’s native language, and fellowship, listening, devotions, testimonies, and prayer are key parts of every session as well.  Following the school system’s calendar, ESL meets during the school year three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday) at the Plano Campus.  We also teach ESL through our Apartment Ministry and increasingly in people’s homes and apartments across the area.  Childcare is provided for ESL.  Citizenship classes are Saturday afternoons from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

We also now minister through our literacy program in the Vickery Meadows area of Dallas.  Kika Jamir and his wife Anung are recent graduates of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; through the Dallas Baptist Association they are helping us minister to huge numbers of refugees that have come from all over the world, but especially Bhutanese, Nepalese, and Somalians.  The area is full of these, new to the U.S. and in desperate need of all of the essentials to live – food, clothing, healthcare, etc.  But more than anything, they are in need of the love of Christ.  You can help. They are sweet people and easy to minister to.  We cannot turn a “blind eye” to these new neighbors.  We teach them English as a way to share God’s Word and the Gospel.

Many people believe that you have to know another language to work in our literacy ministries, or they think you have to be or have been a teacher.  Neither of these are pre-requisites to helping.  A heart for the Gospel and for helping others is ALL that is needed.

Fulfill the destiny that God has had for you from the foundation of the world.  You’re needed in literacy missions!

Persian Ministry

The Persian Ministry seeks to reach the Persian community right here in Dallas.  Many Persians have come from the turbulent country of Iran.  Out of the darkness of Islam, many have found Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

Prestonwood seeks to reach this community through its own language in culturally relevant ways.  This happens through two Farsi Bible Fellowship classes that meet each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. at the Plano Campus.  Prestonwood also partners with the Translation Ministry during the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service at the Plano Campus to proclaim the Gospel in Farsi.  Interested individuals can pick up translation headsets at the Plano Campus Atrium NextStep Booth.

Translation Ministry

The heart of God is for people from all nations.  Imagine the worship of God in every tongue, every language!  If you look closely on a Sunday morning, you will see people wearing headsets in the service.  The Translation Ministry makes it possible for people to hear the Word of God preached in their native tongue every Sunday.  Most come to hear the sermon in English, others come and hear it in Spanish, and some even in Farsi.  Through this ministry, the Gospel is proclaimed in three different languages at Prestonwood every Sunday.

Can you speak a second language?  Do you know someone who does?  Then this is the ministry for you.

Sunday Morning Worship Services Translation Times (Plano Campus):
