Buckets of Hope

Fill a Bucket, Feed a Family in Haiti

As a church family, we are praying and providing financial gifts to help the hurting people of Haiti who have been devastated by the January earthquake and its lingering effects. And, now, we are joining churches all over the country in the Southern Baptist Convention ministry, “Buckets of Hope,” which allows us to physically do something to help Haitian families.

This weekend, Feb. 13–14, we will provide plastic, five-gallon buckets in the Atrium and children’s and students buildings. We’ll also have information on the specific food items to purchase and on the precise way to pack the bucket so that everything fits. Each bucket will provide food for a Haitian family for one week.

After you have packed your bucket, it can be returned to the church Atrium during the three weekends beginning Feb. 20–21.  The buckets will be shipped by the SBC Disaster Relief ministry to Haiti. (FYI: Do not enclose the $10 check for shipping; cost will be covered through our Disaster Relief Fund.)

This is a wonderful opportunity for our families to share Christ’s love with those in great need. Our goal is to collect more than 2,000 buckets.

Disaster Relief Fund

When Haiti was devastated with a catastrophic earthquake on Jan. 12, and millions were in dire need, our church family responded quickly by donating to our Disaster Relief Fund. So far, more than $146,000 has been given and we continue to receive gifts for this great need. Currently, we have distributed $90,000 evenly among three Christian organizations that we have partnered with in the past.

• The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention had a Global Response Team immediately on the ground in Haiti, assessing damage, making plans and giving chaplaincy aid to individuals and families as the trauma from the earthquake created tremendous spiritual and emotional needs. www.imb.org

• Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization led by Franklin Graham, is always among the first to respond. The initial need was medical, so our funding has been used to support these efforts to provide medicine. www.samaritanspurse.org

• Victim Relief/Texas Baptist Men has provided water purification systems, one of the greatest needs during any disaster. Three large water purification units were provided immediately, and currently about 10,000 family units have been made available. www.texasbaptistmen.org

Please continue to give as God leads you. The need is great; the harvest is plenty. More plans are being made for further distribution of funds as rescue and rehabilitation projects continue.
